John Register

Let’s start with surviving failure, shall we?

John Register failed to clear a hurdle as he trained for the Olympic Games—a move that led to a tragic accident and altered his life forever.

As he shifted his focus and embraced a “new normal” mindset, the decorated Persian Gulf War combat U.S. Army veteran became a two-time Paralympic athlete representing the US and now distinguished international speaker.

As he takes the stage, his original walkout song plays “overcome adversity and be the best you.” John Register is battle-tested in many ways but to me, he is a renaissance man through and through. I’m blessed to know him as a friend and mentor but today he kindly agreed to be today’s guest for “Actually, Ashley…” to bring a dose of greatness and inspiration to you!

One day while we were catching up and walking through the Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs (if you haven’t been it’s a MUST VISIT), I spotted the artificial leg he used to win a silver medal in Sydney, Australia. It’s surreal to see these things in a museum and know all the hard work that went into this moment in history.

His outstanding resume includes advising 3 U.S. Secretaries of State including Condoleezza Rice on disability foreign policy. As he describes it, he “amputated his fears” and founded the U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Sports Program to help wounded veterans use sports as a tool for rehabilitation.

“It is all about building a championship mindset. You have to target the podium. If not, you will be just like everyone else.” - John Register

In this work, he continued to draw on the power of storytelling to develop a champion’s mindset and transform challenges into triumphs. He eventually distilled this into 10 Stories to Impact Any Leader: Journal Your Way to Leadership Success which includes guided questions to spark self-reflection, evaluate our own narratives, and sharpen invaluable leadership skills to forge ahead.

Failure has never defined Register just as it shouldn’t define you. His discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking has helped him in the face of adversity and now he dedicates his life to help grow teams, transform organizations, and support leaders of impact.

His client list includes big names like Southwest Airlines, Coca-Cola, Deloitte, Frito Lay, NASA, US Bank, Gilead Sciences, Infiniti, New York Life, Trane Technologies, Komet USA, Lumen, and Lexus but he offers an inspiring and motivational message that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds and industries.

Join us on Tuesday, May 14th at 10am as we talk about all these things and more.
